Dutch date: One thing on their minds

The Dutch seem to take pride in their tightfisted behavior; they relish in their uncanny abilities to always find good bargains and to somehow always get the better end of the deal. The English brought this Dutch characteristic to the forefront centuriesago by developing the terms going Dutch and Dutch treat. With the English and Dutch being great seafaring nations and rivals on the world’s oceans during the tumultuous 17th and 18th centuries, the dry-witted English derided the Dutch by poking fun at their frugality and peculiar ways with money.

My first time in a Dutch sauna, in fact, left an indelible impression upon my mind, for that experience was unlike anything that had ever happened to me and even beyond my wild imagination. In short, the all-women aerobics class that I was gawking over during my Nautilus workout decided to join me, en masse, in the sauna room after their class ended. Being an unsuspected tourist at the time, needless to say my state of attentiveness, and even anxiety, immediately rose up as numerous long-legged, completely naked beauties settled in around me in the sauna room. Being the only man in this sauna, wearing nothing but a distressed look upon my face, in a foreign country surrounded by naked women speaking a foreign language, I knew then and there that the Dutch are truly a unique breed of people and that my stay in Holland was going to be anything but uneventful.

English hooligans

The next weekend the games were to be held in Ajax stadium in Amsterdam and the packs of English hooligans were foaming at the mouths because they were playing their archrivals, the Germans. The entire city of Amsterdam was on edge and more cops than ever were patrolling the streets. The English packs came in by the hundreds early Saturday morning. The first item on the agenda for the English football fans was to head straight for the watering holes in order to start the inebriation process. While in the process of getting intoxicated, they took advantage of the Dutch liberal drug laws and started smoking the cannabis in typical hooligan excess. Since cannabis is a depressant, the English football fans were pacified and all ambitions for violence were depleted. So there they were, hundreds of glassy-eyed English hooligans previously ready to tear up the city, staring blankly into space throughout the hundreds of Coffeeshops in Amsterdam. Not one incident occurred and not one arrest was made.
